Cooking with Therapy: Preparing for Independence at Home
March 28, 2025
At Siena Gardens, therapy isn’t just about exercises—it’s about empowering our residents with the skills they need to confidently return home. One of the most important aspects of daily life is cooking, and our therapy team goes the extra mile to ensure residents feel safe and prepared in the kitchen.
Recently, we hosted a group therapy session focused on real-life cooking skills for a few residents getting ready for discharge. Together, they practiced fine motor skills by chopping fresh vegetables for a salad, worked on standing tolerance and safety while forming and frying burgers, and most importantly, gained confidence in their ability to cook independently.
Beyond the physical benefits, this session was also a time for laughter, socializing, and camaraderie—key ingredients to overall well-being. As one resident, Bev, shared,
“I haven’t had this much fun cooking in a long time.” Another resident added,
“It felt good to laugh. The food was delicious.” And perhaps the most rewarding feedback of all—
“I feel confident and comfortable going home when it’s time.”
At Siena Gardens, we believe in whole-person care—preparing our residents not just to heal, but to thrive. Our therapy services go beyond rehabilitation—we equip our residents with the skills, confidence, and support they need to regain independence.
