Love Lives Here at Siena Gardens
February 14, 2025
At Siena Gardens, love is in the air, and no couple embodies that more than John and Sue. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we had the joy of sitting down with them to hear their love story—a journey that began over six decades ago and continues to inspire everyone around them.
John and Sue first met at church when she was 17 and he was 25. With a playful wink, Sue caught John’s attention, and after the service, he asked to drive her home. Sue, quick-witted and charming, responded,
“You can… but only if you sit with me at church.” John happily agreed, and from that moment on, they were inseparable. Their first date was at a drive-in movie, and just one year later, in 1964, they became husband and wife. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising three children, welcoming five grandchildren, and now cherishing time with their three great-grandchildren.
When asked about the secret to their 61-year marriage, their answer was simple but profound. They believe that choosing the right person first makes all the difference, and being comfortable with each other and maintaining open communication are the keys to lasting love. Sue adores John’s forgiving heart and his kindness as a father.
“I couldn’t have picked a better partner to raise a family with,” she said. John’s favorite thing about Sue is just as heartfelt.
“The way she loves me,” he shared.
“Pick a good one and hang on to her.”
After a lifetime together, their advice to young couples just starting out is to always be willing to forgive, never give up, and make sure to have fun along the way. Sixty-one years have passed, and yet, as Sue sweetly says,
“It’s not long enough when you’re with the right person.”
Happy Valentine’s Day, John and Sue. Your love story is a beautiful reminder of what true love looks like.
